’There is a silent story whispered through the rows of grains and swaying grasses. A story of slowness, patience and sensibility, rooted in the quiet cycles of tending and unseen labor that come before the harvest. We reimagine this time of the year, when leaves slowly fade into orange and crops reveal the fruits of their ripened cycles. Beneath the dominant narrative of productivity and extraction, we search for another story.’

Gathering Ground, Gathering Grain was as a week-long outdoor exhibition and public programme at Buurtwerkplaats Noorderhof. The exhibition reimagined harvesting not only as the mindful gathering of Earth’s resources but also as a metaphor for drawing on the care, wisdom, and shared knowledge within our communities. With a focus on feminine and queer connections to the land, a number of artists, selected through an open call, performers, and local communities were brought together to reflect on the quiet cycles of tending and unseen labor that come before the harvest, reminding us that growth is rooted in silence, patience, and nurturing.

The exhibition opened with a full-day event programme including a wreath-making workshop, tea ceremonies, a pop-up bakery, a session on somatic practice and queer healing, seasonal dishes prepared from the local harvest, vinyl music, and a lecture-performance on sharecropping.

The exhibition was made possible with support from AFK and sponsored by Breugem Bier & Salmari.
